During a career in local government in London (1974-2002), Adrian FitzGerald was Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea (1984-85).
He then spent twenty years locating the FitzGerald, Knight of Kerry, surviving family archive. These papers had become widely dispersed among private and public collections in Ireland and England. He recorded and edited this material in accessible form. In 1919 he transferred all the manuscripts which he had assembled in his own collection to the Boole Library, University College, Cork. He edited "A Man of his Times, The Papers of Robert FitzGerald, 17th Knight of Kerry", 2021, and "Disillusioned Unionist", and "Rejected Emancipationist", 2 volumes, "The Papers of Maurice FitzGerald, 18th Knight of Kerry", 2025.
He served as Vice-chairman of the London branch of the Irish Georgian Society, and as President of the Irish Association of the Order of Malta and of the Benevolent Society of St. Patrick."
